This science deals with the use of optical systems, lenses and other types of optical aids, refractive errors and their corrections. An optometrist is a doctor (OD) of optometry, not a medical doctor. He uses various vision therapies to correct eye abnormalities and may prescribe medications for the eyes. The functions of an optometrist include recognizing the ocular and visual symptoms of eye diseases, understanding the many problems affecting the eyes, and referring patients to appropriate specialists for treatment.

In this way an optometrist identifies and diagnoses problems related to the eyes by treating them.
